Drinkwell hefty homemade filter

I like my Drinkwell fountain, it stores 2 week’s worth of water for our cat, and our cat loves driving from it over still water.  My only gripe is that the little filter packs cost $2 each, and they expect you to change them every 2 to 4 weeks because the packs are so thin and small.

The output of the water pump slumps after a few months, and I need to completely disassemble the water pump and remove all the contaminants inside.  I always wonder if things will run smoother if I replace the filters more often, but I also wonder if the motor will stay clean if I have a more effect filter working.  Well it’s time to find out!

There is plenty of space inside the Drinkwell for more active carbon, as well as a more hefty and effective filter media, so it’s pretty easy to set the whole thing up.

All parts are easy to get from Amazon:

  • 3 pounds of activated carbon – $8.66
  • 1 foot x 6 feet aquarium filter media (5 micron) – $14.75
  • 3” x 8” mesh bag – $4

Every time I’m cutting out 3.5” x 6” worth of filter, so I get 16 filters, and a ton more active carbon.

End result – more filter, more carbon.  Will it keep water more fresh and the motor more clean for a longer amount of time?  I guess I won’t find out until a few months later.  Stay tuned for a long term report. 🙂
